  Free speech versus pot shots

I was prepared to say "now, that's not right."

When I read that WRKO host John DePetro was fired for calling Grace Ross a "fat lesbian" on air, My first thought was "here's where we have to take it on the chin and stand up for a jerk in the interest of fairness."

Then I read what he said in context.

In context he didn't just call Grace Ross a 'fat lesbian' (for yes, she is indeed both), no, he clearly stated that she is one, that they're politically irrelevant and all that fat lesbians are good for is working the 3rd shit at Burger King. Grace Ross may be a fat lesbian, but she's also well-educated and smart. As another fat lesbian, and one who doesn't necessarily support Grace Ross even, I'm pissed off an appalled. Yes, please, fire this asshole.

"I could go now a lifetime without Grace Ross. She has nerve. This whole business of 'well since we're being ignored'. No, you're irrelevant. Get off the stage! I couldn't stand her at the end. At one point I was about to yell: "Will somebody tell that fat lesbian to shut up. Shut up. Go home. Burger King is looking for another third-shift person to work the grill. Enough."

Turns out this is DePetro's comeuppance for a previous homophobic remark - for which the station had warned him 'one more remark like that...' - so good riddance. If someone calls me a fat lesbian, that's one thing. But if they go on to imply that people like me are somehow less deserving? Forget it - fight's on. This guy isn't merely calling people names, and that's why he was fired.

Sorry, John. You'll get no defense from me. If the Herald's Howie Carr, according to the Boston Globe, wants to call ted Kennedy "fat boy" or Hillary Clinton "a lying bitch", that's speech I'm willing and ready to protect, even if I don't like it. But you... you're a sexist homophobe and an idiot. See? I called you names without insulting an entire section of society. It's not that hard. idiot.

PS - Don't forget to vote y'all. There are few freedoms more important.
